If you’re reading this, you’ve probably seen videos like these:

And now you’re worried about hidden cameras in Korea.
I certainly was.
The first time I saw the first video, one of our friends had shared it with us a few days before my wife and I were going to Korea for our honeymoon.
I was appalled, and immediately started doing research of my own. I was shocked at how many search results were being returned for “hidden cameras korea”, and that’s when I found this video, and many more like it.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. All our flights and hotels had been booked already, and they were nonrefundable, but the thought of canceling the entire trip crossed my mind.
Even though I also found videos on how to detect the hidden cameras, some of the hidden cameras looked so microscopic that I’m sure if the person wanted to, they could keep it hidden from any detectors.
But what really bothered me was visiting somewhere where this had become commonplace. Did I really want to travel somewhere where many people seemed todo or tolerate these kinds of behaviors? Especially for our honeymoon! Even if we somehow dodged being recorded by hidden cameras, what else bad could happen to us?
That night, my wife and I discussed our next steps and decided we would still go, agreeing that if it got too bad, we would just cut the trip early and go home.
It was sad because I was initially so excited to visit Korea. I had listened to BIG BANG through all of high school and college, and even watched the documentary about how they first became a group. I remember sitting in a theater hopelessly trying to hold back the river of tears flowing uncontrollably down my face while watching Train to Busan.
Korea gave birth to songs and movies and dramas that has made me laugh as well as cry and I love its people for that. So to have to confront this reality about a country I love was deeply disappointing.
But after having been in Korea for two weeks, I do have some good news.
In our entire trip, we stayed at 5 different hotels in Seoul, Busan, and Daegu, and at these hotels I thoroughly searched for hidden cameras. I didn’t find a single one.
You can find the hotels I stayed at in my Seoul, Busan and Daegu itineraries.
But here’s the main takeaway if you are worried about hidden cameras during your trip in Korea. My opinion is if you are staying at reasonably nice hotels (4.0+ rating on Google / booking sites), you most likely do not have to worry about hidden cameras.
Am I saying Korea doesn’t have a hidden camera problem at all? Definitely not. There are many cases of hidden camera criminals, even celebrities have been caught red handed.
So I will advise you still check for them in hotel rooms and bathrooms. It only takes a few minutes when you first check into your hotel room, and if it will give you peace of mind for the rest of your stay, why wouldn’t you?

Ultimately, I had a wonderful time in Korea, and I can’t wait to go back, and I hope this article helps give you some peace of mind about your trip too! Until next time!
